Your Beach Vacation Glow: When to Tan and How to Make It Last

Your Beach Vacation Glow: When to Tan and How to Make It Last

Your vacation spray tan should be one less thing to stress about.

Pools, hot tubs, ocean water, sunscreen, shaving and massages can all affect how a spray tan wears—but none of them need to ruin your glow. With the right timing, preparation and aftercare, you can enjoy your vacation and your tan.

When Should You Get a Spray Tan Before Vacation?

Schedule your spray tan one to two days before you leave.

This gives your color time to fully develop and allows you to complete your first rinse before traveling. It also means you won’t be navigating airports, long car rides or vacation activities while your tan is still developing.

Before your appointment:

  • Exfoliate thoroughly 24–48 hours beforehand.
  • Complete any waxing, facials, manicures, pedicures or massages before your tan.
  • Shave at least 12–24 hours before your appointment when possible.
  • Arrive with clean, dry skin free from lotion, oils, deodorant and perfume.
  • Wear loose, dark clothing after your appointment.

Most importantly, follow the rinse time given by your spray-tan artist. Avoid water, sweating, tight clothing and skincare products while your tan develops.

Can You Swim With a Spray Tan?

Absolutely. Your vacation is meant to be enjoyed.

Chlorine, salt water and extended soaking can gradually shorten the life of a spray tan, but a quick swim will not instantly remove it. The biggest factor is how long and how often your skin is exposed.

To help protect your color:

  • Apply a quality broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen before swimming.
  • Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours and after swimming, sweating or towel-drying.
  • Rinse with fresh water after leaving the pool or ocean.
  • Gently pat your skin dry instead of rubbing it with a towel.
  • Apply moisturizer after showering to replenish your skin.

A moisturizing sunscreen lotion is often kinder to a spray tan than highly drying formulas. Your skin’s health and sun protection always come first—never skip SPF to preserve your color.

What About Hot Tubs?

Hot tubs can fade a spray tan more quickly because they combine hot water, chlorine and prolonged soaking.

You can still enjoy one, but try to keep the soak shorter. Rinse afterward, pat dry and moisturize well. If you spend every evening in the hot tub, expect your tan to fade a little faster—and pack a gradual tanning moisturizer or your favorite Sunny & Sheer mousse for a touch-up if needed.

Can You Get a Massage After a Spray Tan?

Yes, but timing matters.

Whenever possible, schedule your massage before your spray-tan appointment. Massage oils and repeated friction can cause uneven fading, particularly on the back, shoulders, arms and legs.

If your massage is part of the vacation experience, wait until your tan has fully developed and you have completed your first rinse. Ask whether the therapist can use a lighter amount of oil, and shower gently afterward if needed. Your tan may fade a little in areas receiving the most pressure, but it should not disappear completely.

Shaving and Exfoliating on Vacation

Shaving naturally removes a small amount of color because it lightly exfoliates the skin. Use a fresh razor, light pressure and a moisturizing shave product. Avoid repeatedly shaving over the same area.

Around day three, you can use very gentle exfoliation if needed to keep the tan wearing evenly—especially in areas where color tends to collect or become patchy. Think soft washcloth and light pressure, not a harsh scrub, exfoliating mitt or aggressive body treatment.

The goal is to gently smooth the skin, not scrub away your tan.

Moisture Is the Secret to a Longer-Lasting Glow

A spray tan fades as your skin naturally sheds, so hydrated skin helps your color remain smoother and more even.

Apply a quality moisturizer every morning and evening. Choose a gentle, nourishing formula and avoid products containing harsh exfoliating acids, retinoids or drying ingredients while you want to preserve your tan.

A few additional vacation-friendly tips:

  • Take shorter, lukewarm showers instead of long, hot ones.
  • Avoid scrubbing your skin with towels, loofahs or exfoliating gloves.
  • Pat dry after bathing or swimming.
  • Change out of wet swimsuits instead of letting damp fabric sit against your skin.
  • Avoid body oils until after your first rinse, and use them sparingly afterward.
  • Pack moisturizer, water-resistant SPF and a self-tanning product for optional touch-ups.
  • Stay hydrated—healthy, hydrated skin holds color more evenly.

Go Enjoy the Vacation

A spray tan is meant to help you feel confident—not make you afraid to swim, soak, shave or enjoy yourself.

Time your appointment one to two days before your trip, protect your skin with broad-spectrum water-resistant sunscreen, rinse after swimming, moisturize generously and treat your skin gently. Your tan may naturally soften throughout the vacation, but it should continue to fade evenly and beautifully.

Book the activities. Get in the pool. Schedule the massage. Take the pictures.

You’re good to glow.
