SPF News: America Is Finally Catching Up
Share
We love a glow-up. Especially when it means more options for protecting your skin.
Meet bemotrizinol, a sunscreen ingredient that has been used internationally for decades and received U.S. FDA approval in June 2026. It’s a long-awaited addition to America’s sunscreen lineup—and a name you may start noticing on your SPF label. Read the approval news.
So, what makes it worth talking about?
Protection that holds up in sunlight.
Bemotrizinol is a UV filter that absorbs both UVA and UVB rays. It’s also photostable, meaning it resists breaking down when exposed to sunlight. For sunscreen formulators, it offers another way to build effective protection into products that feel good on your skin.
There’s a cosmetic benefit, too: it can help support lightweight formulas without the noticeable white cast associated with some mineral sunscreens. The final texture and finish still depend on the entire formula, but the potential is appealing. Protection that fits comfortably into your routine? We’re listening. More about bemotrizinol’s properties.
Why did America take so long?
In the United States, sunscreen is regulated as an over-the-counter drug. New active ingredients must meet the FDA’s requirements for safety and effectiveness before they can join the permitted lineup.
International availability doesn’t automatically translate into U.S. authorization. The regulatory pathway and the data needed to support it have contributed to the wait; the FDA itself has acknowledged that its process historically moved too slowly. Bemotrizinol’s long use abroad was part of the story, but U.S. review still had to happen. The FDA explains the process.
We weren’t first. We were just late to the glow-up.
What does this mean for your routine?
More options—not a reason to put your current sunscreen on pause.
Keep choosing a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours while outdoors and after swimming or sweating, following the label. Sunscreen works alongside shade, protective clothing, and a little planning—not as permission for unlimited sun exposure. Sunscreen guidance from the American Academy of Dermatology.
And yes, we’re talking SPF at Sunny & Sheer.
Because loving a bronzed complexion and caring about your skin belong in the same conversation.
Our approach has always been about creating beautiful, believable color without needing to tan in the sun. A sunless tan gives you the look; it does not replace sunscreen or provide UV protection.
Keep the color. Keep the SPF. Let your glow be a choice you feel good about.
Your glow can be sunless. Your protection shouldn’t be optional. ☀️
